I did this ride a long time ago
in 1975 (maybe 76?). The map is from memory and may not be exactly
correct. It was a friend's idea to do a down to Key West and
on the way back stay with some friends of his in Sanabel. This
was a strong selling point for the ride because we were on a
shoe-string budget. I was a little concerened about how well
the bike would do because I had a mid-sized Honda 500-4. It
turned out to be a very good bike for long rides.
This was a great ride. The weather was
nice the entire time. It was sunny with afternoon popcorn thunderstorms
that were expected and welcome after a hot day. Key West was
nice but we were anxious to get to Sanabel to stay in a house
after camping the previous nights. Sanabel was perfect. Back
then it was a small Florida 'Margaritaville' overrun with Aligators.
Probably not the smartest thing to do, but we shot some pictures
of a gator in our yard. She was huge and had babies nearby.
Our hosts in Sanabel were three girls
and a guy who made the trip from Virginia in a beetle-bug. I
think my bike ride was probably more comfortable.
My regret is that we didn't take more
pictures. This is a mistake I made too often.
